My favourite life lesson (part 3) proactiveness

I always use this example to explain to people what “proactiveness” means in a manager/subordinate relationship.

It’s lunch time and your CEO from overseas (who you don’t get to see often) tells you that he is hungry. These are the different responses based on the level of proactiveness:

1. Me too.

2. What do you want to eat? (bad also most common)

3. There is this Japanese place which is really good.  Do you want to go there?

4. We have a really good selection near the office, Chinese, Japanese and Western, do you have a favorite?

5. We have a really good selection near the office, Chinese, Japanese and Western, yet the Japanese one seems to be the most popular one these days, do you want to give it a try?

6. We have a really good selection near the office, Chinese, Japanese and Western, yet the Japanese one seems to be the most popular one these days, it’s my favourite too, should we give it a try? I’m sure you won’t regret it!
