How to start a startup (unorthodox version) – Part 6

6. Update yourself

This seems similar to the previous point but this is so important it needs to be a separate one.  You have to have a learn and adapt habit: for yourself and therefore for your startup.

The startup world is changing very quickly. One year, something is hot and now it is not. One season, some tools were popular and now they are obsolete. One week, you were dominating the market (at least in your mind) and now you have another new and competent competitor.

Yes, you will have a lot of reading to do, websites, forums, blogs, etc (e.g. techcrunch.com, crunchbase.com, news.ycombinator.com). But you have no choice. Staying updated is like staying fit: you have to go to the gym and constantly control your urge not to eat another bag of chips. The only way to make it more interesting is not just be a spectator. Try to participate. In fact, you should try to be active in some of these forums.

The bad news is that there is a lot of time involved. The good news is however, because everything is changing so rapidly, everyone is playing the catch up game. So you are never really that far behind.
